4 Tips To Help Your Child Maintain A Healthy Weight

Keeping children healthy and on track when it comes to weight is definitely not an easy task, and various questions plague parents on a daily basis. “What is healthy? Is my child too fat or too thin? How much and what should I give him / her to eat? Organic or not?” We compiled a list of four tips every family can follow to help kids maintain a healthy weight.

#1 – Encourage Daily Activity

Exercise is good for body and mind, not only for adults but also for children. Children should be having at least 60 minutes of daily activity to maintain a healthy and balanced weight. These 60 minutes do not have to happen all at once. Several 10-minute or even 5-minute burst-outs of activity spread over the day are just as good.

Younger children can be kept active by playing ‘tag’ or simple ball games, riding scooter and utilising playgrounds with their swings and climbing frames. As for older children, more demanding activities should be included, such as biking, skateboarding, a sport club, martial arts, swimming or dancing. Walking or cycling short distances also contributes in keeping a healthy weight and is a great way to be active together as a family.

#2 – Make the Meals Healthy

Nothing is worse for kids than letting them eat whatever they want. Not watching a child’s meals is dangerous, as fast food and candies will be the number one to-go snack for every kid.Healthy and balanced food, which includes nutrients and vitamins needed for growing up, should be on the daily menu. Try to avoid unhealthy fats and preservatives, and look for hormone-free meats.

Another trap many parents do not watch out for are the kind of drinks given to their children. Babies and toddlers are often given juices to drink, which contain amounts of sugar that may be unhealthy even for grown-ups. Try opting for a better and healthier alternative, such as Isomil with its proven Isomil formula for kids, or the Pediasure complete milk powder.

#3 – Child-Sized Portions

You might be wondering what the right portion size for your children is. The answer to that is not simple, it is very vague indeed, as there is no official handbook, and you will have to use your own judgement. A good rule of thumb is to start with small portions and let your child ask for more if he / she is still hungry. Try to avoid forcing your child to finish his / her plate. You should also encourage him / her to eat slowly and have set mealtimes.

#4 – Be a Good Role Model

The last tip should be pretty obvious, yet is overlooked by so many parents. You are your children’s superhero and role model. Everything you do reflects on them. If you eat unhealthy, your children will do the same. So, do not cook healthy meals for your children and order a fast-food delivery for yourself. Be the one guiding the kids through daily exercise, healthy meals and non-sugary drinks.

We hope these tips will give you a good direction as to how to maintain the healthy weight of your children. Let us know of any other tips you have implemented in your daily routine to keep your kids on a healthy weight by leaving a comment!
