5 Ways To Help Making Showing Up To Your Dental Appointment Bearable

Nobody likes their dentist. Most people dread having to make a dental appointment since the prospect of their visit ending in pain is all too common. Most patients remember a cavity drilling. An awkward cleaning with bleeding gums and enamel scraping. Then there is the dreaded possibility of a root canal procedure. You may try to postpone dental appointments for as long as you can, but eventually you must bite the bullet and attack dental health head on. How will you handle it?

Visiting your dental professional does not have to be all about pain and shame if you use the correct strategies. Most likely pain will be present, but there are methods to distract your attention towards things not oral agony related. A good imagination, iron will, and a strong mind and spirit are key in overcoming your fear of the dental appointment.

1.  Make a fist, even before facing the dentist chair

Clenching your fists prepares you for a boatload of pain. Muscles are at the ready and your body is ready to accept your painful predicament. When you finally enter the procedure your body is prepared for the worst and having dental work done is far from that. Your body will lessen the perceived pain because of its readiness. The myth of most treatments pain tends to be exaggerated by word of mouth anyways.

2.  A mental empowerment chant

Like many forms of stress relief, breathing and chanting is known to be a form of meditation connected to practices of spirituality. Tranquility is achieved even in the face of stressful situations. While in the dental chair you can use the techniques as the dentist works on your hygiene. Repeating empowering thoughts in a meditative style or focusing on breathing techniques until the procedure is completed. You will notice time passes faster, stress is avoided, and calmness is restore.

3.  Parking lot howl

Usually the real stress and fear leading up to a dental appointment is all in your mind, having been built up and up leading to the date. A good way to release such tension is with a good yell or howl in the parking lot before your appointment. This will ready you and release a whole lot of pent up tension.

4.  Painkillers ahead of time

Taking in a over the counter painkiller just before entering the clinic is a good way to prepare for some real painful procedures. It helps with confidence that you can handles the worst, and also does prepare your body to fight the pain receptors. Just make sure you check with yourDentist ahead of any procedures that require anesthesia. Always be careful.

5.  Become personable with your dentist

Become friends with your Dentist. Nothing makes going to an appointment more inviting than actually liking your dentist. You won’t dreadshowing up at their chair. You will almost look forward to it. You will also trust their advice and which procedures they prescribe for you. They will also learn to trust you and care when they see you are anxious about a treatment

If anything is scarier than monsters, it is most like a looming dentist appointment. Millions of patients coward and is even recognized as a phobia (Dentophobia).  Great news is that you are now more prepared to go through with your appointments. Come see a dentist in Barrhaven and feel relieved knowing you are well prepared.
