Eye Exam: Is A Laser Retina Scan Worthwhile?

When it comes to eye health and eye exams, many people do not think much about the different tests and equipment that may be used in standard eye exams. However, if you want to be sure that you are receiving the best possible care and treatment for your eyes, you will need to take an interest in the scans and tests that you receive when you are getting your eye exams. Laser retina scans, for example, are often touted as one of the best new innovations in eye care and eye disorder prevention. Get to know more about laser retina scans so that you can best determine if a laser retina scan is worthwhile for you and your eyes. Then you can make an appointment at the well-known family eye care center, 20/20 Image Eye Centers here in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Why Do You Get Retina Scans?

When you have your eyes examined, one of the tests your eye doctor will usually run is a retina scan. Scanning your retina helps your eye doctor to get an idea of what the surface of your retina usually looks like as a baseline. That will help your doctor to more easily analyze any changes that occur to your retina over time. Macular degeneration and detached retinas are two conditions that can be detected through retina scans.

What Is Special About A Laser Retina Scan?

A traditional retina exam is largely dependent upon your eye doctor’s examination of your retinas. They will use eye drops to dilate your pupils and use a magnifying instrument to manually examine the retina of the eye and look for any abnormalities.

Laser retina scans on the other hand are more convenient to patients, especially those who not fans of eye drops. Laser retina scans do not always require dilation. Additionally, laser retina scans use digital technology that can make them more accurate. The laser scans the eyes and creates digital renderings of the surface of the retina.

These digital images can more easily be examined by the doctor to look for tiny abnormalities. They can also be stored in the doctor’s files to compare the images over time to more easily note changes in your retinas over time. This can lead to earlier diagnosis of retinal disorders and issues which can help with better and more effective treatment.

Knowing this information about laser retina scans, you can better decide if this eye exam is the best option for you.
