Benefits of Adjustable Beds For The elderly

Caring for the elderly in your family can be a daunting task. Their health concerns form a major priority, but they can be catered to by having all necessary items around.

Adjustable beds are one such item which should be on the top of your list. Spinal cord related issues are found in more than 60 to 70% of adults. Apart from spinal cord issues, bone related disorders are majorly reported. This includes osteoporosis, arthritis and general decalcification of the bones.

Benefits

Lumbar support becomes very important to cater to the pain and the symptoms that arise due to back related issues. Beds that can be adjusted are often found in hospitals, but are a utility item for homes as well. By adjusting the bed to the optimal amount, the curvature of the spine is set in a manner that back pain is reduced.

Spinal stenosis and related diseases are pretty common in elderly in U.K. Adjustamatic beds are built in such a manner that they would reduce the swelling of the legs which occurs due to being bed ridden. The soreness in the body muscles is also reduced due to the ergonomic design.

Because the design allows traction in various directions, the bed can be used for back stretching. Then because the elevation can be adjusted, the stomach muscles also get relieved from staying in one position.

What happens is that when the stomach retains one position for long period of times, the chance of acid reflux increases. And the acid reflux can cause heart related issues. So all of such medical ailments are interconnected and can be catered to through such measures.

Adding Features

It is also possible to add different features like massaging motors to the beds to optimise its usage. The automated usage also caters to the excessive dependency on the attendant. In the case of an emergency, the elevation can be adjusted. So the cost of having to hire a caregiver is also reduced.

The flexibility of the bed allows the elderly to watch TV, read a book or even use a laptop without having to experience much pains. Such items have a direct impact on the quality of life of the person. Since the position is completely adjustable, elderly would not be a victim of pain causing positions.

The adjustable beds for the elderly are an item of necessity for people who have become disabled or invalid due to some accident. Regardless of whether the injury is permanent or temporary, it’s a utility item to have.

Beds of this sort consists of a vertical lifter, motor, battery supplies/backup, cot sides (retractable), cot side protectors, locking castors, mattress (different types) and any additional feature that you would want to add like a therapeutic message system.

In the case of mattresses, you can choose from different types like pocket spring or foam. Mattress should be selected based upon the opinion of the physician.

So using such measures, the care of the elderly and bed ridden people can be done in a much efficient manner.
