Dealing With Lower Back And Knee Pain

The lower back is an amazingly well engineered structure composed of joints, muscles, ligaments and bones working in harmony. However, this structure is not immune to damage, and once it occurs, individuals are often left with chronic back problems that cause discomfort or even loss of mobility. Most cases of severe pain in the lower back arise from injury to the ligaments, discs, joints and muscles. The body reacts to injury by generating an inflammatory healing reaction. Though inflammation appears to be minor, it often results in significant pain. There is a considerable nerve supply overlap to the ligaments, muscles, discs. Consequently, it is often difficult for the brain to accurately identify the source. For instance, a torn or degenerated lumbar disc can feel the same as a pulled muscle resulting in painful muscle spasms and inflammation in the same area. Though ligaments and muscles heal quickly, this may not be the case for a torn disc.

At times the duration of the pain is the only way to identify its cause. Depending on the cause of the pain, symptoms may vary greatly. Possible symptoms are: dull or achy pain restricted to the lower back. Burning, stinging pain that spreads downward to the back of the thighs, this may be accompanied by tingling or numbness, pain that grows after prolonged standing or sitting.

Knee pain – A deep insight

Most individuals have had a minor knee problem at one time or the other. Most body movements do not cause any trouble, but it is unsurprising that symptoms may arise from continuous wear and tear, injury or over use. Most knee injuries and problems occur during recreational and sports related activities. Pain in back of Knee is the most common forms of pain that people experience. The knee is the largest joint in the human body. The upper and lower bones of the knee are divided by two discs known as menisci. The upper bone or femur and the lower leg bones (fibula and tibia) are joined by tendons, muscles and ligaments. The surfaces of the bones inside the knee are covered by articular cartilage which serves as a shock absorber and provides a smooth frictionless surface for joint movement. Despite the fact that knee problems usually occur as a result of injury to one or more of these structures. Injuries are the most common cause of knee pain. Acute injuries may be caused by a direct trauma to the knee or as a result of abnormal bending, twisting and falling.

Blood vessels and nerves may be damaged or pinched during the injury and the lower leg may initially feel cold, numb or weak. Knee problems may also occur as a result of overuse. Overuse injuries result from repetitive activities that place excessive pressure onto the knee for prolonged periods of time. Activities such as jogging, bicycle riding, and stair climbing can lead to inflammation and irritation if carried out continuously. Treatment for knee problems or injury may necessitate the use of first aid measures such as rest and bracing. Functional knee braces are crucial to complete healing after an injury as they reduce knee instability and could also reduce the risk of injury to other part of the knee. Back braces also work in s similar way, limiting motion in the lower regions of the spine that could delay healing of fractures and other forms of injury. Back braces have been proven to reduce lower back pain and discomfort.
