Important Facts About Inguinal Hernia

Inguinal hernia is a condition occurring in the groin region of the body when intestinal or fatty tissues press on through inguinal canal. Location of the inguinal canal in the human body is very close to the abdomen base and it always remains closed. Both men as well as women possess inguinal canal in their body. Uterus ligament remains located in the inguinal canal in women while in men, the testes descend through this canal just before birth. Hernia in the inguinal canal can result in an overhanging bulge which might be very painful for a person when he or she moves. There are a lot of people who do not treat this problem because it does not show any symptoms. Immediate medical treatment would be of good help in preventing further discomfort and protrusion.

Symptoms of the Condition

This type of hernia is noticeable through its physical appearance. It causes bulges in the pubic region and these bulges can increase in size when a person coughs or stands up. This type of hernia might be sensitive or painful when touched. The other symptoms of this condition include:

  •         Pain when bending over, coughing and exercising
  •         Sharp pain
  •         Burning sensations
  •         Men might experience swelling scrotum
  •         Heavy sensation in groin region

Causes and the Risk Factors Associated with this Condition

There is no definite cause of inguinal hernia. Nevertheless, weak spots identified within the groin muscles and the abdominal muscles can serve as one of the major causes. This type of hernia can also be caused by exerting extra pressure in the abdominal or groin region of the body. Risk factors of this type of hernia can increase the chances of this condition in men and women. Some of the factors that might increase your chances of suffering from this condition are as follows:

  •         Personal history of different hernias
  •         Heredity
  •         Premature birth
  •         Being male
  •         Being obese or overweight
  •         Cystic fibrosis
  •         Pregnancy
  •         Frequent constipation
  •         Chronic cough
  •         Standing for a long time on a frequent basis.

Different Varieties of Inguinal Hernias

Inguinal hernia is of two types and they are direct and indirect hernias. Indirect inguinal hernias are the most common types occurring in premature births. This happens due to an underdeveloped inguinal canal. This is a type of hernia which can occur anytime during the life of an individual. The condition is generally common in men. Direct inguinal hernias generally occur in adults. These are caused due to the weakening of muscles in adulthood. It can also be categorized as strangulated and incarcerated hernias. Incarcerated hernias tend to strike in groin muscles while strangulated hernias are more severe restricting the flow of blood to the small intestine. These types of hernias can be very dangerous and they can also result in the death of an individual. Therefore, it is necessary to get them treated as early as possible. This can easily be prevented by maintaining healthy weight and by having healthy and fiber-rich diet
