Safe And Effective Types Of Eye Surgery

The term used to brief surgical procedures which correct common eye disorders (nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia) is refractive surgery to lessen the dependability on prescription eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.

Today’s world, a laser procedure called LASIK (LAY-sik) is the most effective refractive eye surgery that is performed in the United States.

LASIK (LAY-sik); so called in-situ keratomileusis. This techniques uses flap in the outer layer of the cornea to get the tissue beneath and computer imaging called wave front technology to create a detailed image of the cornea that can be used as a guide and this makes LASIK different from other operating procedures of eye disorders.

PRK; generally called photo-refractive keratectomy, is used to treat mild to moderate disorders of eye visions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. It is just like Lasik where the doctor uses a laser to reshape your cornea’s surface, not the tissue underneath. The doctor may also use computer imaging of the cornea.

RLE; stands for refractive lens exchange and its treatment is as same as cataract Toronto eye surgery. Though there are other names such as PRELEX, clear lens exchange (CLE), clear lens extraction (CLE), and refractive lens replacement (RLR). Treatment involves a small cut at the edge of the cornea, and replacement of natural lens with a silicone or plastic lens.

Intacs; called as intracorneal ring segments in medical terminology, or ICR, where a small surgical cut is done inside the cornea and two crescent-shaped plastic rings at the outer edge is placed. The rings help in flattening the cornea which changes the focal length of light when right rays falls on retina.

Phakic intraocular lens implants; is generally done on eye patients who are too nearsighted for LASIK and PRK and on whom these techniques cannot be performed due to limitations. The surgeon makes a small surgical cut at the edge of the cornea and implant lens to the iris or inserts it behind the pupil were it best suits, but unlike RLE, your natural lens stays in place .

AK or LRI; is short for astigmatic keratotomy. It is a surgical procedure used to correct astigmatism. Patient having astigmatism, the eye is shaped like a football instead of being round as the curvature is changed of the lens

There are different types of other laser Toronto eye surgery. LASIK (LAY-sik); so called in-situ keratomileusis is one of the most common. Many patients who were treated with LASIK surgery end up with 20/20 vision. But remember like all medical procedures, it has both risks and benefits. Only your eye surgeon can better tell you, if you are a good candidate for laser eye surgery.
