Let’s face it: life can be tough. We have good days, bad days, and just-okay days. But if you start to notice that most of your days are falling into the “bad” category, it’s time to take a step back and re-evaluate what’s causing it. Are you feeling stressed out? Is there something or someone in your life that’s making you unhappy? Have you lost your self-confidence? No matter what’s going on in your life, it’s 100% within your power to make some changes to improve it. Here’s our guide for what to do if you are in need of a lifestyle change.
If you’re in need of a diet and exercise change…
One of the easiest ruts to fall into is neglecting our own physical health. When we get busy or stressed or depressed, our inclination for self-care can wane. Or if we suffer any loss or tragedy in our lives, our motivation to take care of ourselves can, understandably, take a nosedive as a result.
To get back on track and change your lifestyle in the name of health and wellness, consider the tactic of “strength in numbers.” Join a gym, or find some fitness group you can join that will help provide you accountability to get started, and, more importantly, keep going. Or, if the idea of a group overwhelms you, join forces with a friend and become each other’s fitness accountability partner.
If you’re in need of a work change…
We spend a lot of time each day and each week at work. Whether you work in an office, for yourself, or in any professional setting, the work you do can take a toll on you, both mentally and emotionally. If you feel that your work may be a source of negative energy in your life and that you need a break, then take it! It’s okay to take a personal health day and spend some time away from your busy day-to-day life. Take some time off, go on a vacation, and do the things that you enjoy. You’ll feel reenergized and recharged after you do.
If you’re in need of a relationship change…
The people in your life can be a great source of joy, fulfillment, and belonging. But when those relationships aren’t going well, those people and the time you spend with them can also be a source of hurt, anger, and stress. If you feel you are in need of a lifestyle change due to some of the people who you are choosing to keep company with, take a timeout to evaluate the current relationships in your life. Specifically, take a look at the top five people you spend the most time with – Are those relationships positive? How do they make you feel on a daily basis?
If you’re in need of a mental health change…
Is your mental wellness or self-image in a bad place? Sometimes, tackling mental health issues on your own just isn’t feasible. In these cases, it’s a great idea to seek out the advice of a friend or loved one. They can help you talk through what you’re dealing with, and maybe even help you realize the deeper issues that are causing you strife. It’s always helpful to get a third-party perspective, especially from someone that you know and trust.
If you don’t feel that you have someone who you can talk to in your immediate life, there are tons of options for therapy that you can look into. Find a therapist near you by asking around, or even searching on Yelp in your local area.
If you’re in need of a change in drinking or drug habits…
If there’s a more significant issue affecting your health, like a struggle with alcohol or drug use, do not be afraid to seek treatment for yourself. Instead, you should feel proud that you recognize this need for change in your life, and your decision to take a step in the right direction. Dealing with drug and alcohol abuse is a tough battle to wage alone. Build your support system with some professional help, and get the treatment that you need to make this pivotal lifestyle change.
